Sorry - I was blending "auth" problems with other crashes.

The first link I mentioned turns out to be unrelated and the
second link is a problem with calling getpwuid after a chroot.

This thread also mentions a similar problem after upgrading to FC2 that
was resolved by removing chroot (this message has an strace log):

So there have been chroot-related problems with newer library code that
are manifested by rsync crashes (when it isn't even rsync's fault).
I inadvertently lumped them together with this latest, resolved, "problem".
