If you can move the sending rsync to the host that has the network drive
mounted locally you'll find that the copy is much faster than using a
network drive as the source.  It will also move 1/3 of the memory used
to another machine, which, if your system is swapping as Paul suggests,
should make a big difference.

Finally, make sure you're using at least rsync 2.6.2 (preferably 2.6.3)
because it is much more memory efficient than earlier versions, and it
is also faster when run under MS Windows.
