He did get an error message.  In your case it was a bug that
has been fixed so warnings wouldn't have been issued in any
case.

To address the general thrust of your suggestion, silence is
golden.  Rsync does report errors but unless disabling
features that were explicitly enabled that would be excessive
chattiness that would annoy people who know what they are
doing.  Perhaps at some future date it could be a debug flag
if my selective reporting gets added.
