Thanks for the help, but I think it was stupid after all.

It appears that I had an error with the trailing "/" for the source
directory.  I was inconsistent in applying it.  So, I overlooked the
fact that I was *really* backing up to /backups/pw/home/home/ on some
occasions and /backups/pw/home/ on others.

Funny, I really did look for that error, but somehow convinced myself
I hadn't made it.
