User Signal 1

Hi,

I have been struggling over the last couple of weeks with cron jobs 
running rsync commands that would simply disappear without completing. 
 I was finally able to run the same rsync command manually and have it 
die.  It put a message on my screen which said  "User Signal 1".  Could 
someone tell me what conditions cause a User Signal 1 to terminate the 
rsync process and what I need to do differently to avoid this problem?
