Enhancement suggestion: improve the host not found error message

What operating system are you talking about?  Solaris 2.7 reports
    rsync: getaddrinfo: g45 873: no address associated with hostname.
and Linux kernel 2.4.18 reports
    rsync: getaddrinfo: g45 873: Name or service not known
