Yep, PhotoRec is useful to recover deleted data.

It needs another location to save recovered files to, and can take a
couple of hours depending on the amount to scan. Recovered files are
saved in subdirs with an auto-generated filename (like f3567567.doc),
so your friend could be up for a lot of time consuming work.
