I had been using LibreOffice version 5.2. So I used Ubuntu Software to 
install LibreOffice 6.0.2.1.

"README_en_-US" said this.
{LibreOffice requires a recent version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 
for full functionality. JRE is not part of the LibreOffice installation 
package, it should be installed separately.}
So I searched Synaptic Package Manager for "Java Runtime Environment". 
In the resulting list, four packages showed the Ubuntu "Package is 
supported" icon. So I installed those:
	gcj-5-jre;
	gcj-5-jre-headless;
	openjdk-8-dbg; and
	openjdk-8-jre.

As you suggested, I searched Synaptic Package Manager for "LibreOffice 
import filters". Listing the following:
	libjodconverter-java; and
	libjodconverter-java-doc.
And I installed those.

Next I used LibreOffice version 6.0.2.1.0+ to open one of my old ".LWP" 
files. This still showed the garbage!
