I installed and used GParted. On the USB drive I made a new HFS+ 
partition. Which was recognised by both Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and Mac OS X 
10.4.11 (Tiger). Now the old Mac is copying data from its hard disk 
drive to the USB drive's new volume.
