Some on this list may be interested in open data and the government's use of Linked Data and the Semantic Web. Why not attend the Aust. Govt. Linked Data Working Group's (http://linked.data.gov.au) AGM this Thursday at 3pm at the ANU (see

https://www.meetup.com/Canberra-Semantic-Web-Meetup-Group/events/242186324/ for map).


Semantically enabled data is as "open" as data can be in that it's content is formally and sufficiently described for anyone to (re)use without special knowledge or proprietary tools. All the W3C standards used to define Semantic Web and Linked Data (transfer formats, as well as the data models) are of course open too thus Linked Open Data is the data analogue of FOSS software. That and it's pretty cool tech.
