OK, for now I do this via a Perl script that parses for EXIF data and
if it doesn't exist inserts an EXIF and uses file creation date. But
if shotwell is a one step thing I'm happy with this too!

As EXIF tags? (useable by other things)? I'm curious.

And yes, in my "spare time" (ie: procrastination time), I tag photos
with various things that get put in the EXIF header.
