What was the hardware controller?

mdadm understands *some* standard RAID formats - if the card does as well 
then you may be able to work with mdadm.

Incidentally - if you still have the card, could you blat the images onto 
some fresh disks and get the data off that way?  Then, of course, set the 
controller to JBOD and use software RAID :-)

Perhaps someone else has a copy of the controller if the controller is 
dead.
