Have you used the driver recommended at http://sane-project.org ?  Perhaps non-intuitively it is Plustek, not 
Canon.

I have occassionally used a Canon 660U, also with Plustek and it w-o-r-k-s, with acceptable quality, if time is 
not of the essence.
