I don't mind building it from source BUT the MythTV forums say the playback
doesn't work because MythTV can't use the h/w fully and so is doing $stuff in
s/w which is too slow.

Ahh I see yes openlec is Kodi (XBMC) based. Kodi has invested substantial time
into getting it to work on rpi h/w. That's the key difference MythTV hasn't
had that work.
I've half mentioned why I want MythTV in another thread so I wont cover it again.
