Paul replied to me with more information - rather than to the list, so
I've put some of the new information here for posterity.

I overlooked the above - not sure if it's relevant.

Paul sent a link to that information on his DropBox. Nothing looked odd.

Paul also sent me a link to this information at his DropBox. I parsed
that to find the most CPU intensive processes and then sorted by time
(see attachment - sorry about the process truncation).

This I didn't receive. What I did get was some additional, likely very
pertinent information:-
***********************************************************
Paul encounters the problems with GIMP and Chrome *after resuming from
suspend*.
***********************************************************
I've encountered similar problems with resuming from suspend, though not
recently as fast boot times make suspend redundant (a sub-10 second boot
time and session saving beats resuming or unhibernating with large
amounts of RAM).
I'm now waiting for information about the hardware as I've come across
similar problems with video drivers. Either fixed by installing the
proprietary drivers or by forcing the proprietary drivers to unload the
modules prior to suspending - then forcing them to be reloaded after
resuming.
