My Telstra ZTE phone appears as: 
Bus 002 Device 008: ID 19d2:0010 ZTE WCDMA Technologies MSM

It works for me in Ubuntu Trusty's network-manager as telstra.wap rather than 
telstra.internet.

I can send more detail of NetworkManager's activities if you like.
