This involved peering through a stereoscope at overlapping pairs of 
aerial photos.

This was very good at looking at landforms, such as dipping sedimentary 
strata.

An aircraft took sequential exposures on a flight path.

Stereoscopy.

> I confess to knowing sod-all about it other than early 20th Century curios so I'm interested to know that it's still a thing.

A bloody sight cheaper than boots on the ground!
