By turning off "Enable Networking" in Ubuntu's top-right communication 
menu, I have managed to stop the SSH terminal window from crashing! And 
so I have enabled a stable session editing a test document on the phone.

That was using vi via the default sh shell. For reference, I had another 
terminal window open running vimtutor under my favourite fish shell. And 
so I have begun repeating my earlier vim lessons, but now with vi on the 
phone.
