CLUG Programmers' Special Interest Group Meeting - 9th October 2014

Date: 9th October 2014 (Second Thursday of the month)

Time: 19:00 - 21:00 (or when it finishes)

Speaker:	Brenton Ross

Abstract:	It has been my experience over the years that many
computer users are quite happy to use arbitrarily
complex GUI programs (see Blender for example), but are
very nervous about using a command line program. The
UNIX desktop environments, from CDE on, have focussed on
running GUI programs. The result is that the amazingly
rich set of command line UNIX/Linux programs is now
		almost invisible from the desktop.
VICI aims to make the UNIX command line programs easily
available to the users of GUI desktop environments. A
flow chart can be built with commands and their
parameters. This can then be saved as a script which can
be installed into the user's desktop as an application.
The script supports all Linux commands, pipelines, file
redirection, variables, functions, and multiple threads
		of control.

Venue: Room N101
