Hi guys,

Ivan is a friend of mine from ANU who I worked with about 10 years ago at
the National Centre for Epidemiology and Public Health (NCEPH) at ANU.

It would mean a lot to me if you would be able to put the word out about
this position through your networks and maybe the Science and Data
Mini-Conference at PyCon Australia on Friday (is there an official way to
do this?).

This has not been publicly advertised and interest is being sought through
the networks in the community. Please pass this on to anyone you think
would be interested.

The deadline is soon and I can assure you that Ivan is a pleasure to work
with.

distribute

Dear All,

The Long Term Ecological Research Network (LTERN) is seeking to hire a
senior data management officer.

The Job ad is at http://jobs.anu.edu.au/PositionDetail.aspx?p=4051,
pasted below
and attached as a doc.

We're not advertising very widely on the web and are instead hoping to tap
into networks of data management people, so if can send on to an email list
or if you know someone who this job might be perfect for, please forward to
them.

We tailored the description toward someone with more data management
skills, rather than the data librarian side. There is a lot of cross-over
though, which you will see in the position description, so we think a wide
variety of people might like this job.

Please note that it is best for people to access the website rather than
contact me directly if they have questions, because then our HR system can
offer more help.

Cheers,

Ivan Hanigan

Position description

Responsible to

Data Portal Project Manager/Analyst

Role statement

*PURPOSE STATEMENT:*
The Long Term Ecological Research Network (LTERN) integrates leading
Australian long-term field research sites across Australia to tackle
critical questions associated with the impacts of disturbance on Australian
ecosystems. The 12 contributing plot networks have been actively monitored
for many years and in most cases several decades, and span a diverse range
of ecosystems, land tenures and land uses.
The design of the LTERN plots and data collection procedures provides
infrastructure to allow the research community to:

1. Develop a detailed understanding of key ecosystem functions and
processes, over decadal periods from plot to landscape scales.

2. Quantify critical relationships between vegetation condition
and/or biodiversity and major disturbance regimes such as those associated
with fire, logging, livestock grazing, invasive species, extreme weather
events, and their interactions with climate change.

Priority areas for LTERN are: (1) data collection; (2) data management and
provision; and (3) the synthesis and communication of knowledge to
researchers, policy-makers and the general public. Across LTERN ecological
data collected from the plots will continue to be shared via TERN supported
infrastructure (i.e. the LTERN Data Portal).

*KEY ACCOUNTABILITY AREAS:*
*Position Dimension & Relationships:*
The Senior Data Management Officer is based at the LTERN Office at ANU and
reports to the Data Portal Project Manager/Analyst. This position also
works closely with the LTERN Research Data Specialist and LTERN Project
Officer/Statistician. In addition to LTERN member institutions other key
research institutions are the University of Queensland (TERN Central
Office) and James Cook University (Australian Supersites Network Office).

*Role Statement:*
Under broad direction the Senior Data Management Officer will:
1. Ensure that Data Licensing Deeds are legally appropriate and meet
privacy requirements. This requires oversight on licenses applied to all
data sets being published to the LTERN Data Portal, and liaison with LTERN
data custodians to resolve legal issues.
2. Implement all user requests using the LDAP service and Morpho to
coordinate access to LTERN data. This includes negotiation between
scientists and data owners regarding proposed study designs.
3. Take responsibility for the development and maintenance of the Web
Content Management System.
4. Lead the development of new data publication processes that employ the
Digital Object Identifier (DOI) to replace the LTERN and Supersites current
URL-based system. This is to enable data citation metrics to be captured
when data re-use occurs.
5. Collect and report Key Performance Indicator on the importance, value,
quality, availability of data, and timeframes for inclusion of data sets
into the LTERN Data Portal.
6. Develop and maintain procedures and appropriate documentation to ensure
data meets consistent high quality standards.
7. Manage metadata for datasets to be published to the LTERN Data Portal
using the Ecological Metadata Language (EML) metadata scheme.
8. Liaise and develop networks with users of LTERN datasets, including the
research community, data providers and other stakeholders.
9. Provide high level administrative support for various TERN meetings and
workshops as required.
10. Comply with all ANU policies and procedures, and in particular those
relating to work health and safety and equal opportunity
11. Undertake other duties as required consistent with the classification

management. Experience in environmental science / ecology / biology or

ability to apply relevant knowledge in the context of LTERN and TERN.
6. Demonstrated ability to describe research datasets using an accepted
metadata schema for the purpose of promoting discovery and access.
7. Proven ability to work collaboratively, exercise sound independent
judgement, and establish and meet deadlines.
8. Experience with Relational Databases such as MS Access, MySQL or
PostgreSQL.
9. A demonstrated understanding of equal opportunity principles and polices
and a commitment to their application in a university context.
