Snowdrift is a means to help fund software development, offering the 
best of both Pledges and Crowdsourced funding.

A patron will deposit money into an account on the site, then commit to 
pledging an amount of money (say $10) for everyone X people that Join 
the project pledge. Each of those X people would then pledge an amount 
for every Y number of people that join them, and so.

Snowdrift is funded as a project on it's site, and it's aim is to create 
an open, transparent and accountable way to fund free, libre and open 
software.

it's still in alpha stage, so you can give it a test run with fake money 
while they bed it down.
