It's not a race.  There's no point in "winning".  It's nice to be
technically better, and have a more sustainable ecosystem.  But the "year of
the linux desktop" is IMO about as relevant as "the year of the holden car".
 I've always suspected such jargon is used by Microsoft marketers in a
desperate attempt to make themselves look good.  I'm with Linus: (in my
words) Linux doesn't aim to destroy Microsoft, that will be a totally
unintended side-effect of just being a useful operating system.
