Just did some experimentation with the larger device: I can get a stereo 
input (receiving different signals through each channel) through the 
line-in port, but the mic-in seems to be single-channel (getting 
identical, downmixed samples through both channels).

Interestingly, the gain seems to be similar between mic & line, so you 
may be able to use the line-in for a stereo mic with no preamp.
