and I don't believe it's relevant to your problem (has no bearing on
alsamixer saved levels)

*If* the problem is alsa it's likely to be "load-module
module-device-restore" not commented out in /etc/pulse/default.pa (but I
suspect you're using alsamixer via GNOME's volume controls - not paman,
which is PA volume controls)

(Try the alsactl mentioned above first)

Also check that "mute_and_zero_levels "$TARGET_CARD" || EXITSTATUS=1"
is commented out in /etc/init.d/alsa-utils
