You didn't say if ifconfig showed errors... (either in tx or rx)
That will enable you to work out whether problem is with the modem, or,
which side of the modem the problem is for isolation testing.

I'm not familiar with that model. If ifconfig shows errors:-

Try telnet to it.

It's only useful for wireless connections (filters the data stream for
signal strength info)
