Hi Mike, I have looked at fuji-xerox printers too, and found that they are  
just too much aggro to set up.
HP printers just work, even the GDI ones like laserjet p1005.
Ubuntu just downloads a file from HP and compiles it.
Currently have HP colour laserjet cp1215 and it works out of the box.
If you need extra functions like toner levels, Ubuntu offers to download  
and compile a driver.
They were available < $100 recently
