+1 to jQuery

Also validating your pages using the W3C validator (http://validator.w3.org/)
is a good way of avoiding this sort of error (and being embarassed by many
other problems in your pages, but that's another story)

If you use Firefox then installing the Firebug extension is also a good
idea, particularly if you are doing much with Javascript.
