It sounds to me like some kind of protocol incompatibility between the
WN821N (or its drivers) and the router, rather than a connection
strength problem.

Funnily enough, I'm in the process of upgrading my home wifi to 802.11n
and was looking at that same TP-Link module. If it's of interest, I'll
trade a high-gain external antenna 802.11g module for the WN821N. The
ones I have are noname dealextreme ones, but they have a common chipset
(rtl8187) and they've been working fine for me. Not sure if I still have
the driver discs if it's for Windows, though. Happy to trade back if
your friend has any problems.
