Ok! :-D

Problem sorted - ssl *does* work, fffacebook and MSN might not, but not
because of any failure to support ssl on the part of GNU Linux.

My "guess" would be that those sites require some sort of
Microsoft-centric component to the transaction. As previously stated, I
don't have a means of checking that.

At this point I've three suggestions:-
1.wait for some of the CLUG gurus to solve it for you
2.
http://www.google.com/search?q=ubuntu+problem+connecting+facebook+msn&hl=en&num=10&lr=lang_en&ft=i&cr=&safe=images&btnmeta%3Dsearch%3Dlinux=&tbs=qdr:y
3. try the debian-user mail list. (see following notes)

If you try the latter option I'd strongly suggest you:-
*apologetically inform them you are running Ubuntu (it ain't Debian)
*supply as much information about your system as possible (consider
paste-bin et al)
*tell them which https sites you can and can't connect to

If you're lucky Camaleón may emerge from where he hides in the parapets
and sort your problem.

Note: it's a high volume list, subscribe with caution.

Cheers and sorry I can't help you further.
