Just a note: if you want ever mass changes across all systems you
probably end up better using CFEngine/Puppet than cloning the images.

All you need is an automated install system that pulls the initial
config from somewhere.

With these tools (automated install + CFEngine/Puppet) I think you can
build a more flexible system, for example you can use dedicated HW or
different type of virtualization with relatively small changes.

YMMV
