Swapped the camera for a slightly more recent quickcam, Quickcam Pro 9000, using the UVC driver and also v4l2 rather than v4l1 and everything has come together nicely. Night and day for the win. The previous one was using the gspca driver. UVC just seems like such a good idea, I'm in favour myself.
