[clug] Terminal Line Drawing Character funnies (OS/X)

This simple fault has been driving me crazy...
Using 'mutt' locally in 'thread-view', I get rubbish displayed
but ssh into a debian system and mutt shows the line drawing chars.
[Examples at end. CLUG emails for August 2010]

Documenting it might help others.
I did STFW, but only found people asking "why", no answers.

For historic reasons, I use a Mac as my primary desktop.
This same problem could also affect people with Linux/Unix at times.

I tried different TERMs - fault persisted. Not vt100, ansi or xterm related.
Looked at TERM definitions Debian vs OS/X. Only Minor diffs.
Tried every single font OS/X had to offer (bizzare!)
Tried changing the 'Character mapping' from UTF-8 to Western(Latin1) and
others...

Tried an xterm under OS/X (running under a real X-11 environment).
Still a bust...

Didn't seem to be any Terminal.app preferences or any Unix O/S setting.

Then it dawned on me that I was looking in the wrong area :-)
The hint was:
 the same screen displays correctly on Debian.

So I looked for "LC_" and "LANG" variables...
And that was it.

Hope this is useful to someone.
