If the X server didn't start, the cause may be evident somewhere inside: /var/log/Xorg.0.log Does the Toshiba have NVidia video? I seem to recall a need to recompile NVidia drivers to get going. Though I thought that's what dkms was supposed to do automagically. -- MC
