This is all well and good, but it's not that simple.  There is
something to be said for having the foresight to avoid putting
yourself in these situations in the first place.  If that doesn't
happen (best intentions or otherwise), well, sometimes pain is
necessary to correct past mistakes (the same as initially choosing a
solution that's sub-optimal in the short-term, but pays off later).
Sometimes the best course of action is to suck it up and get it over
with, ie. to cut your losses.  Saying "it's all too hard, so let's
just stick with the existing non-free software" is a cop-out.
