Linux is actually penetrating more than you might think. 

I am in the process of developing a network based installation and 
customisation system for JPL in support of the NASA's Deep Space Network.

True, it's fairly specialised equipment the linux is being used with but
with the uncertainty Oracle has made over Sun and Solaris, the movement
to Linux is accelerating.

In my previous job the movement towards linux had also began. So its not 
isolated. I think resistance is ebbing. All in all, the future is not
as bleek as you might think.
