as a part-time interloper I can see some of the obstacles as the mailing lists is really a 
barrier to quick access to threads and makes it hard to contribute.

so here are my votes.

1. Dynamic website eg wiki
2. online forum (eg phpbb)
3. calendar (could also use Wiki)

as to facebook well that can be populated from the above systems. ie once you have a good 
source of information you can setup systems to tweet or post on these sites.
