Thanks for all the help & suggestions.
I did the 'language pack' thing and removed some parts of OpenOffice.org
(why did I have .za installed?)
The apt-get dist-upgrade/autoremove+purge did some useful stuff - much
obliged. [have to remember that]
I finally got a hint about an 'unreadable' file in ~/.kde or ~/.kde4
(can't recall). Saw there were some files owned by root...
did a:
'find .kde \! -user stevej|xargs chown stevej'
All is much better.
At least 'date/time' allows me more options than UTC.
[Only Australia/Sydney, not Australia/Canberra as in /usr/share zoneinfo)
