Hi Steve

As part of my "invisible cursor" bug diagnostic to confirm it was an 
Xorg driver thing and not a GNOME issue, I tried logging in with a KDE 
desktop (it was an option on the login sceen) but it didn't complete its 
setup and did not display a full desktop. The 'xterm option' worked for 
the purposes of my testing using the pm-suspend(8) command.

I took the upgrade route to Lucid Lynx, and I do recall biting the KDE 
bullet and installing Amarok(to run under GNOME)  on my Karmic 
installation, so YMMV with respect to KDE.
