The WL700gE was only $100 "lightly used" on ebay. I'm not sure if
either of those models are readily available new for <$200 in
Australia at the moment (may be wrong.)

Yeah, just compiling mythbackend & co against ucblic instead of glibc
(for OpenWRT) is probably a medium-sized effort in itself.

Something like a SheevaPlug might do the trick though, as a backend
box, and is even cheaper than these routers.

Although for $320 you can buy a dual core Acer Revo on ebay, which is
beefy enough for combined backend, frontend & transcoder box. So
that's where I intend to head when I upgrade my XBMC Xbox.
