You might also find that it needed a lot of randomness to do that.

I'm just trying to figure out - did you mount the drive through cryptoloop and
then format it, or is there some magical "encrypt the file system in place"
thing that I haven't heard about?  I mean, the same speed figures apply - it's
just going to take a long time to copy everything over when you're encrypting
and sending it via USB.  But it wouldn't be quite so much of a 'I have to
leave the computer on all night darling...' process, maybe.
