Well, any properly pedantic nerd would point out that closing a reed
switch won't cause much of a pulse down the wire (ignoring eddy
effects) where a magnet passing a coil would create a such a pulse. A
reed switch will need a bias voltage waiting to initiate a current
flow when the switch closes.
But I'm sure there are no such annoying pedants to be found around here.
