Yeah, it does. A temporary workaround is to use gksudo:

$ gksudo brasero

Can you try growisofs from the command line? It might give more useful
error messages.

growisofs -use-the-force-luke=dao -dvd-compat -Z /dev/sr0=blah.iso

And for even more detail, try

strace growisofs -use-the-force-luke=dao -dvd-compat -Z /dev/sr0=blah.iso
