Im not sure the idea is new. From my research they were first invented
in 1882.

On April 29, 1882, Werner Siemens drove the Elektromote—an electrically
powered carriage—along a 540-m test track in Halensee near Berlin.
Siemens' invention was not only the first electric vehicle, but also the
world's first trolley bus.
