Have a look at this site http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK or just  
google chdk.

If you get a canon, almost any canon, you can put a chdk OS on a  
memory card and do lots of nifty things.  GPL.  Put a normal card in  
and you have a stock canon again.

I have used it and it's nifty.  Even a cheap canon can do amazing  
things.
