I think, after a few of these incidents, the various people who run the group
and the email list are prepared to unsubscribe and ban people from the list if
their posts are deemed offensive or beyond the boundaries of good sense. I
have felt in the past that I might need to step in if things went further, and
they haven't. If I ever need to the people will be warned publicly.

Having suggestions that people can 'keep in mind' and then ignore when they
feel justified is a really good way to end up with a really nasty incident, to
my mind. And for every person that objects in public, there's ten who read
the list and say "stuff that, it's too ugly". Our public record is on display
- - everything you've ever said on the list is still there. People will point
at that very 'sexism in FOSS' thread and say "that's why I don't come along to
meetings" - because of something those posters have said which turns that
reader off. As I said many months ago, two people I personally spoke to were
put off the CLUG list and coming to meetings simply because of behaviour on
list which (I know in one case) the other person thought was perfectly justified.

These days I have a 'one post per thread' policy unless things need my
attention. This is partly to stop threads becoming Paul-opinion-forums, and
partly because everyone has to shut up at some time. One of the curses of
email lists is that they let a couple of people go on and on about something -
often only tangentially related to the original post - where everyone else has
moved on, or wished they could. I would recommend to those more voluble
people on the list to be cautious in how often they post, lest the need to
'have the last word' override common sense. We need all opinions, not just a few.

Have fun,

Paul
