[clug] Apple vs Linux Ecosystem

What I really don't like about the Apple Ecosystem...

The backup drive for my Mac (1Tb, USB, Western Digital) managed to get
itself into a mess.
The filesystem *mounted* (passed quick check), then backups 'failed to proceed'.
This wasn't a silent failure, but infinite wait on a silent error.
Just finding the log file with the message was a long, arduous task.

Multiple runs of 'disk repairs' later, all good. [Many hours...]
[Pretty scary messages from Disk Utility, too!]

Advice from a Mate That Knows: get DiskWarrior. US$100

What I appreciate about the Linux/FOSS ecosystem:

 - it's not Pay-all-the-way. You *can* buy stuff, but don't have to.
 - often times, "google it" yields a few good answers.
 - fsck, except for Reiser (others?), run once, all good.
 - if all else fails, ask CLUG...

And if I find out something significant/useful, I write it up and send it to CLUG as a 'permanent record'.

Thanks for all your collective/individual help and input over the years [not that I'm going away].
The usual forum for saying "What I like about this" is on leaving/shutdown - always too late.

Linux with CLUG for me would be much, much harder and less interesting.
I can still remember the aprehension I had ~10years ago in migrating my daily home desktop to Linux...
[despite running Linux/Unix servers for 10-15 years prior]

Without a decent Safety Net, I and possibly many others would not make the leap.
