I am to a large extent with Brad on this one. I am on this list because I
have been involved directly with CLUG since 1997 sometime.

I lived in Sydney for a year and attended a few SLUG meetings, however I
never liked them mcuh, heck I continued to travel to Canberra every month
for CLUG while living in Sydney.

Admittedly now days I pay less attention to the list and even to attending
meetings regularly than I once did. However I am easily able to ignore
threads that bore me so do not really mind too much what traffic (except the
obvious trolling the other day, which I alas responded to...) ends up on the
list.

Brad points ouot that we will often read and understand posts from people we
know face to face better than others, which is true, and I have to admit I
often filter the list by only reading posts from people I know/respect.

I suspect one reason we have had many people over the years subscribe to
clug even though they may never have been to CLUG or may not even know what
the Canberra LUG is would be due to a large amount of clue some people on
the list have (ozlabs staff (tridge, paulus, sfr, jk, cyeoh, tonyb, BCG,
etc), ANU DCS people (such as Bob and Eric), other Canberra linux people
(brad, Chris Smart, tpot, Crash, Neill, etc) and even when those people move
away they still tend to contributefrom time to time (mbp, nemo, etc)). These
people have over the years helped many others on the list and at other
places and provide some good signal so encourage peoplke to read and
possibly contribute.

Personally I will probably largely continue to filter and read as I wish and
try to relax about everything here.
