That's becuase bus drivers are crazy ;P

Serriously, having done the Auckland <-> Wellington trip a few times, if you
have one driver I allow 12 hours (need a rest at Taupo, or Turangi)  If you
have multiple drivers you can do it in about 9 (assuming you obey the speed
limits).
