[clug] recovering files from a missing NTFS partition

I've got a hard drive from a Windows box
with the main NTFS partition completely unreadable.
What Linux tools exist for recovering photos and PowerPoint slides?

I know that there is pornhunting software
that finds jpeg images from their headers.

Does NTFS record information on how the blocks
are chained together that can survive corruption
  that wipes the filesystem?

The partition table looks sensible,
the first partition is there, mounts and has the Dell utilities.
The second gives' "Failed to read last sector (312416040): Invalid
argument"

TIA,
michaelj
