Heh - I should have replied to this earlier (who knew the CLUG list could get
this active!).  My point of view is that distro wars are so last century, and
people learn from seeing new and interesting things even if they use something
slightly different.  Let's face it, the fundamental differences between
distros are generally an order of magnitude less than those between Linux and
Windows.

My original response was going to be something along the lines that Debian
isn't compulsory for CLUGgers :-)
